A beach day at the Belle Époque

Let's travel back in time and go to a time when the beach began to be seen as a place of leisure. It is hard to believe, but it was not so long ago that sea baths were exclusively considered as a therapy for the sick and convalescent.

The XNUMXth century shows us desert beaches, but with the emergence of the new century, everything changes ... and the Belle Époque brings with it funny images of the first bathers posing enthusiastically at the idea of the sea as a place of enjoyment and enjoyment. Are you ready? Ready? ALAWA!

Getting rid, even if only a couple of times a year, from the tyranny of the dresses and corsets of the time, was a luxury for women. Thus, one of the curiosities that the 20s gave us was the screenette, a kind of tube-shaped bag where women avoided prying eyes when changing clothes.

It's funny, but it wasn't more than 100 years ago that women's swimsuits included stockings and sleeves. It's hard to believe something like this when, today, there are millions of models that propose so many different outfits when going to the beach.

But this is far from the first one-piece swimsuit, born in 1930, a wool garment that weighed more than 30 kilos and was not accessible to everyone. It was not until the 40s that more comfortable and lighter designs appeared, styles that began to be marketed and promoted with models and actresses of the time.

And so it went from a little-traveled coastline to a progressive mass conquest of a coast that, at present, proposes and shares millions of recreational activities and infinite models to wear during the summer season.

A LITTLE HISTORY…

The "beach" phenomenon was born from the industrial revolution, the noble classes are becoming more and more aware of the stale air of large cities and its damage to health. Thus, they find the perfect excuse to migrate looking for seaside resorts. An example of this, the British inhabitants of the mid-nineteenth century march from London to Brighton thanks to a train that connects the two cities with this single task. The same thing happens in other countries like Miami, Mar del Plata.

Later, and thanks to another milestone in technology, such as the creation of the automobile, coastal tourism developed in countries like France, where people traveled from the interior to places like Normandy or Biarritz on the Côte d'Azur.

"ALAWA" DUCKS

We have already seen how women bathed. Garments that looked like street clothes and that later, were outlined, promoted by celebrities of the time who did not hesitate for a second to show the benefits of a piece that was undoubtedly key in the search for female identity.

But how did men bathe? The men's swimsuits looked very different from what we are used to today. An outfit that once turned out to be a bodysuit-type garment, later, after World War II, gave way to elastic and sporty models and designs.

And so a dreamed of enjoyment and permanent renewal is portrayed. A few years of discoveries and changes, in which the swimsuit took different shapes and styles, adapting to the most avant-garde decades and leaving a mark that lasts today.
